Most Santa Ynez Valley wineries lists are just names with no order to them, so we built the opposite: a real 2-day itinerary for a relaxed well-paced weekend. ✨

Here's what we built the trip around - Kaena at the Ranch for the laid-back horse-ranch tasting room, Gainey for the vineyard-view terraces, St. Avalo for organic small-batch pours in downtown Los Olivos, Carhartt for the walk-in cabin with the big back patio, and Buscador in Buellton for tastings poured by the winemaker himself, paired with lunch at Industrial Eats and dinner at Trattoria Grappolo.

Lodi wineries are the ones we recommend most, and almost nobody asks about them.🍷

An hour south of Sacramento sits some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in California, poured in tasting rooms where nobody's rushing you out for the next reservation. Three stops made our last trip. A Rhône-focused barrel room with the doors open to the vineyard. A fifth-generation family estate doing food pairings on the patio. And our all-time favorite, where the Zin is serious and there's an award-winning bakery on site.

One of the best wineries we discovered thanks to local friends. ♥️

A few years ago we were camping near Morro Bay and visiting friends who live in the area. They took us to @absolutioncellars, and it ended up being one of those memorable tasting experiences you hope for on every wine trip. Absolution Cellars is known for producing small-batch, single-vineyard wines sourced from across California’s Central Coast, and their tasting room sits right on the Morro Bay Embarcadero.

We did a tasting, learned about several of their wines, and of course took a few bottles with us. Sometimes the best winery discoveries happen when you follow a local recommendation instead of just the big-name stops.
